Ask the Experts: Three Things to Focus on in Planned Giving

Too many options- lots of questions and magnifying glass

Question: My current planned giving provider offers too many choices, and I don’t use most of them. What are three things I should focus on to grow my program?

First step: Clean your donor data (update age, wealth, marital status, income, address, deceased, etc.) to maximize time and budget with Sharpe’s Data Services. With our findings, we’ll then help you develop and execute your Generational Fundraising Plan with the Sharpe Age- And Wealth-Based Matrix®.

Second step: Plan targeted planned giving mailings based on age and wealth. For example, send personalized brochures on estate planning or giving through an IRA to baby boomers, personalized booklets on noncash gifts to your top major gift prospects and a personalized pocket guide to advisors in your area. Sharpe has print-on-demand publications on all planned giving subjects that you can “make your own” with your organization’s branding.

Third step: Send printed planned giving communications followed by a digital component two or three times a year to planned giving donors. Include donor stories in your newsletter that show the impact of planned gifts on your mission. Sharpe’s experienced team of writers can create customized planned giving content and write donor stories for your newsletter.
