Advanced Gift Planning: Major and Special Gifts

September 17-18, 2024
Washington, DC

Since the increase of the standard deduction, there is greater competition for large gifts from among a smaller number of donors. Overall fundraising success depends upon gifts from these donors now and in the future. This seminar takes a deep dive into the importance of major, special and ultimate gifts and how they can best meet donors’ philanthropic goals. Studies indicate that many bequests and other large gifts are made by people who did not have a significant giving history. It appears that the Great Wealth Transfer has truly begun, so it is essential to understand how this “event” will play out over the next few decades. This seminar will help you understand the upcoming challenges and opportunities for stewardship and relationship building.

Who Should Attend

This seminar is designed for experienced professionals who have several years of fundraising expertise in major and planned giving and who are responsible for an organization’s development and large gift strategy. Even those with a “one-person department,” having responsibility for raising both major and planned gifts, will benefit from this training. The Advanced Gift Planning seminar is directed toward executive directors, chief development officers, senior management and board members.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll learn practical ways to assist donors in making gifts that are most appropriate for their age, wealth, philanthropic goals and other factors. Special attention is given to interpreting a donor’s needs and determining which giving option is the best fit for a major gift or a planned gift. This seminar explains how carefully structured combinations of current and deferred gifts can help your organization reap benefits both now and in the future. Proposed and/or current tax law changes will be discussed throughout the seminar.
